Diabetes and its complications are becoming an increasingly serious health concern in Pakistan, with medical experts warning that around 300,000 people lose their feet every year due to diabetes-related complications.
According to health experts, diabetes can lead to serious foot problems, including ulcers and infections, which may eventually require amputation. Available data indicates that the prevalence of diabetes among people aged 20 to 80 in Pakistan stands at around 31.4%, while approximately 18% of affected patients develop diabetic foot ulcers.
Experts have also warned that the risk of death increases significantly among diabetes patients who undergo foot or leg amputation. According to the reported figures, around 50% of such patients die within three years, while the figure rises to 70% within five years.
Diabetes, commonly known as high blood sugar, develops when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively. As a result, glucose begins to build up in the bloodstream.
Experts say several factors can contribute to the development of diabetes, including obesity, genetic factors, stress and other lifestyle-related risks. If the condition remains undiagnosed or poorly controlled, it can gradually damage different organs of the body.
Uncontrolled diabetes can increase the risk of serious complications, including heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney damage and severe foot problems. Regular medical check-ups and proper management of blood sugar levels are therefore important for people living with diabetes.
A balanced diet and regular physical activity can play an important role in managing blood sugar levels. Walking and other forms of exercise may help improve blood glucose control, while medication and treatment decisions should be made in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.
Although there is currently no universal cure that permanently eliminates diabetes, early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, a balanced lifestyle and regular medical monitoring can significantly reduce the risk of serious complications.
